On Tuesday 6th May, the Dyer Craft gathered at the Woodlands Hotel for their Annual Supper, marking the 29th year since its reformation as an Open Craft. The occasion also celebrated an impressive milestone—332 years since the Craft’s original founding in 1693.
The evening commenced with a special meeting during which Jacquelyn Malcolm was formally confirmed as Boxmaster of the Craft.
A highlight of the evening was a captivating presentation by Past Deacon Tim Heilbronn, titled “Ice and Men.” His talk explored notable Antarctic expeditions, with a particular focus on Ernest Shackleton. Tim brought to life the extreme conditions faced by explorers, offering vivid descriptions of base camp life and the remarkable efforts of the team, including the production and printing of “Aurora Australis” … the first book ever printed in the Antarctic. This publication recounts Shackleton’s 1907–1909 Nimrod expedition, which brought his team within 100 miles of the South Pole.
The evening concluded on a reflective note with Craftmember Dr. Mhairi Towler reading “100% Dundee,” a poem by local poet Mark Thomson from his collection Bard Fae The Building Site. It was a fitting and heartfelt end to a memorable evening.
