It was with great sadness that the Flesher Craft learned today of the death of member Gilbert Grossett Senior at the age of 92.
Gilbert was a lifelong butcher whose dedication to his craft spanned more than five decades. Born in America, he returned to Scotland as a young man and subsequently completed his National Service in Hong Kong. These early experiences helped shape the strong work ethic, discipline and sense of duty for which he would become known throughout his life.
In his early twenties, Gilbert joined the family business and from that moment devoted himself wholeheartedly to the art of butchery. He belonged to a generation of craftsmen who viewed their trade not merely as a job, but as a vocation. Through hard work, skill and an unwavering commitment to quality, he earned the respect of colleagues, customers and fellow tradesmen alike.
For many years Gilbert served the people of Dundee with distinction, building lasting relationships with generations of customers who valued both his expertise and the friendly manner in which he conducted his business. His knowledge of the trade was immense, and his pride in maintaining the highest standards never diminished throughout his long career.
Following more than fifty years in the profession he loved, Gilbert eventually retired at the age of 75. Even in retirement, he remained deeply proud of the craft to which he had dedicated so much of his life and of the traditions that had been passed down through generations of Scottish fleshers.
Gilbert’s passing marks the loss of one of Dundee’s traditional craftsmen, a man whose life reflected the values of service, integrity and hard work. He represented the very best of the Flesher Craft and stood as an example to those who followed him into the trade.
The thoughts and condolences of the Flesher Craft are extended to his family and friends at this difficult time. While Gilbert is no longer with us, his contribution to the craft of butchery and the legacy he leaves behind will long be remembered.
May he rest in peace.
